The Difference Between Oil Type Transformer and Dry Type Transformer

2024-05-10

Transformers are very useful devices that allow efficient use of electricity for things that can only handle low voltage power. They take high voltage electricity from power stations and convert it to low voltage power for safe use in offices, homes and commercial and industrial properties such as large factories.

There are two types of transformers in use today: dry type transformers and oil type  transformers. They serve the same purpose, but there are some significant differences between them. These differences are so important that different transformers are suitable for different situations.

1. Different Nature

Oil type transformer: a new type of high performance transformer with more reasonable structure and better performance.
Dry type transformer: the core and windings are not impregnated in the insulating oil transformer.

2. Different Appearance

Oil type transformers: because the oil is liquid and has fluidity, there must be a shell, the inside of the shell is transformer oil, the oil is immersed in the transformer coil, from the outside is not visible transformer coil (oil-immersed transformers have oil pillow on top, the internal storage of transformer oil, but now the new type of oil-immersed transformers also have no oil pillow).
Dry-type transformer: hesitation without oil, there is no need for the shell, can directly see the transformer coil.

3. Different Installation Environment

Oil-immersed transformers due to the need for fire prevention, generally installed in a separate transformer indoor or outdoor.
Dry-type transformers are certainly installed indoors, generally installed in the distribution room.

4. Different Output and Usage

At present, the voltage level of dry-type transformer is only 35kV, the capacity is small compared with oil-immersed transformer, about 2500kVA, and because the manufacturing process of dry-type transformer is complicated and costly compared with oil-immersed transformer of the same voltage level and capacity. So at present, there are still more oil transformers in terms of usage. But because of the environmental protection of the dry change, flame retardant, impact resistance and other advantages, and commonly used in indoor and other high requirements of power supply and distribution places, such as hotels, office buildings, high-rise buildings and so on.

5. Different Characteristics

Oil Type Transformer Characteristics
Oil transformers usually use oil-immersed self-cooling, oil-immersed air-cooling and forced oil circulation three cooling methods.
Oil transformers take away heat through the natural convection of oil. Oil-immersed air-cooling system is based on the oil-immersed self-cooling system, adding fans to blow air to the oil tank and oil pipe to enhance the heat dissipation effect. Forced oil circulation is to pump the hot oil inside the transformer to the outside of the transformer for cooling, and then send it into the transformer.

Dry Type Transformer Characteristics
Safe, fireproof, pollution-free and can be operated directly in the load center.
Adopting domestic advanced technology, high mechanical strength, strong short-circuit resistance, small partial discharge, good thermal stability, high reliability and long service life.
low loss, low noise, obvious energy-saving effect and maintenance-free.
Good heat dissipation performance, strong overload capacity, and increased capacity operation when forced air-cooling.
Good moisture-proof performance, suitable for high humidity and other harsh environments

It can be seen that dry type transformer and oil type transformer have their own advantages and disadvantages, oil type transformer is low cost and easy to maintain. Due to its good fire resistance, the dry type transformer can be installed in the center of the load to reduce voltage loss and power loss.
